Lewis Hine was born in Oshkosh, Wisconsin, on September 26, 1874. In 1901, Hine became a geography teacher at an Ethical Culture School. Frank Manny, the superintendent, told Hine to be the school photographer. Hine’s primary job was to document the social and academic aspects of the school. From this, Hine realizes what the impact of a photo could do.
With Hine's view on photography, he had promoted the use photography as an educational tool. Hine had become a freelance photographer for the NCLC. In 1917, Hine traveled from the North and South photographing working children.
